Life Insurance Awareness and Mississippi Farm Bureau
September is Life Insurance Awareness Month (LIAM) in the United States, and Mississippi Farm Bureau Casualty Insurance Company wants to spread the word about this essential aspect of financial planning. According to LIMRA, one of the insurance industry’s premier research organizations, slightly more than half of American adults own some type of life insurance (57% to be exact)—and for a variety of good reasons. However, that still leaves a lot of folks without life insurance. If you happen to be one of them, keep reading. You’ll find that life insurance is indeed an indispensable necessity for you and your family.
Why do I need life insurance?
Actually, it’s not a question of what you need—it’s a question of what your spouse or family will need when you are no longer able to provide for them. That’s why, according to 2019 LIAM spokesperson Brooke Shields, this year’s theme for Life Insurance Awareness Month is, “It’s Not for You. It’s for Them.”
You may live a long life and be able to provide financial security for your family well into your senior years. However, life can be dangerous, and bad things happen no matter what we do—or how many measures we may take to avoid them. That’s where life insurance comes in.
How does life insurance work?
Although there are several different types of life Insurance policies, they all adhere to the same basic concept: upon your death, whether naturally or by accident, a life insurance policy pays a set amount of money to the person or party of your choosing. This usually means your spouse, children, or other family members. Of course, the amount varies by policy, and premiums must be paid to ensure that the policy remains active. (Premiums are usually paid monthly, but there are exceptions.) The amount of each premium payment depends on the amount that you would like the policy to pay out. The more the policy pays, the higher the premiums—and for some policies, the longer the term you must pay the premiums.
What are the reasons people buy life insurance?
There are many reasons why people are willing to pay premiums for a life insurance policy, often for most of their adult lives. They may want to ensure that their spouse or family has enough money to live comfortably for a time after they die. They may intend for their life insurance to settle outstanding debts or taxes so that their family will not be held responsible for them. Or they may intend for the money to pay for their own funeral expenses, a child’s or grandchild’s college education, a spouse’s retirement—or any number of necessary and often crucial expenses.
